About W James Mortensen
Jim Mortensen grew up on a small farm in NW Iowa, with a younger brother and sister. The small public school system he attended had no art program, so he attended an adult night school class on watercolor when he was in the 7th grade.
As a teenager he completed the first year of a two year correspondence school in commercial art. On attending college, he decided to major in art and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in art education from Dana College in Blair, NE. Several years later, he earned a Master of Science degree in art from University of Northern Iowa, an Associates of Arts degree in photography and an Associate of Science degree in electronic engineering technology from Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, IA.
He started his career as an art teacher in two small schools in the middle of Nebraska. After his first year of teaching, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as a missile repair parts clerk at an Army training Fort Bliss, Texas and later on a missile base in New Jersey guarding the East coast.
After his discharge from the Army, he spent many years as a professional photographer, working for Chromalloy Photographic industries, Church Impressions and Olan Mills. He also operated his own church directory business along with his wife who also, has a background in the field of art.
Since his last serious paintings were created in graduate school some 45 years ago, he recently decided to return to the field of art upon his retirement in Wellington, CO, where he and his wife, Phyllis, http://fineartbyphyllis.com both produce works of art out of their home.
Phyllis Mortensen has been interested in art ever since she can remember. She created her first art work using crayons, as a pre-schooler.
She has lived all over the United States; from upper California, to the prairie farmlands of Nebraska, the seashore of Florida, the desert of West Texas, the East coast and urban Iowa. She currently resides near the Rocky Mountains in Wellington, Colorado.
Her Christian Grandmother, Florence, blessed her with a scholarship to study art. Phyllis graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in art education from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, after which she became an art teacher.
She has been painting off and on for about 45 years while taking time out to raise a family. During that time, she has won awards upon entering a few local and regional art shows.
Phyllis credits God for the talents she has been given.
